The 2015 Petrie Chardonnay opens with a slight struck match/sulfide note, giving way to grapefruit, apple and white peach notes with hints of marzipan and baking bread. The medium-bodied palate is silky and refined with a good intensity of stone fruit and yeasty flavors, finishing with a refreshing lift. 31/12/16
The Wine Advocate
Distinctive and familiar bouquet of Chardonnay with orchard fruits led by fresh and baked stone fruits then a yellow apple and citrus moment; crushed cashew nut suggest some new oak influences and a layer of toastiness with vanilla reveals the youthful side. On the palate - firm, dry, enegaging and packed with flavours of fruit, oak, some mild oak tannins and synergy. Beginning to integrate this wine ahs a long journey ahead - so be wise and cellar for another 2-3 years or decant for service.

Bright straw-yellow colour with light green-gold hues, paler on the rim. The nose is very fresh and tight, quite elegantly presented with good intensity of white stonefruits and subtle notes of citrus fruits entwined with flinty and minerally lees and balanced, nutty oak elements. Medium-full bodied, the palate is taut, refined and tightly concentrated with a core of harmoniously melded flavours of white and yellow stonefruits, citrus fruits and complexing flint, mineral and nutty detail. The palate is bright, energetic and vibrant with a refined, textural line and fresh, lacy acidity enlivening the mouthfeel. This elegantly expressed chardonnay shows attractive aromas of white stone fruit, rockmelon, almond and oatmeal characters with a touch of vanilla complexity. The palate is finely textured and beautifully flowing, with excellent mid palate weight, leading to an impressively sustained finish. Stylish and refined. At its best: now to 2020
This is a real gem. Pristine fruit is the hero but the wine is stylishly enhanced by subtle infusion of oak. Aromas of stone fruit, lemon peel, rockmelon, and hints of vanilla and cashew lead to a concentrated palate that is richly textured and elegantly fruited, brilliantly framed by bright acidity. The finish is superbly long and creamy. Already a charmer with a potential to develop greater complexity. At its best: now to 2020.
Creamy-textured Chardonnay with seductive ripe peach/tree fruit and citrus flavours enhanced with yeast lees and a thread of chalky minerality. Seamless wine with integrated and quite concentrated flavours. Well priced for a classy wine. Drink 2015-2021.
Youthfully pale, this is tight and quite slender. Shocked from recent bottling? Contemporary gunflint aromas, with stonefruits and nuts underneath. Refined and elegant, with depth. Classical elegance, tight lines and linearity with bound flinty and stonefruit flavours. Minerals and minerality, the oaking discreet and supportive. Fruit sweetness emerges, and the palate lingers and lingers. Much more richness to emerge here. Clone 15, 22 y.o. vines, indigenous yeast fermentation to 13.8% alc., 8 months in 18% new oak with 30% MLF. 18.5-/20
Clive Paton, Phyll Pattie and Ali Paton make some of the best wines in Martinborough and indeed the country. They take care with everything they do, and lead by example, but are gracious enough to help all in the district and beyond. Their wines, overseen by winemaker Helen Masters are benchmarkers. The new release 'Petrie' Chardonnay 2012 was on show. A reflection of the vintage with its slim-line, tightly bound proportions, it exudes complexing flintiness to complement the refined stonefruit and citrus flavours. Beautiful acid cut and great linearity will ensure a good life ahead.

Ata Rangi is going from strength to strength, and credits a new vineyard manager [at the Petrie Vineyard] with the refinement in its fruit since 2009. 2011 has given birth to an outstanding Petrie, at once honed and taut and at the same time delightfully complex and textural. Layers of struck flint and charcuterie float over precise grapefruit and white peach, with an undercurrent of cashew nut French oak. This gravelly vineyard, thirty kilometres north-east of Martinborough, has produced a finely structured mouthfeel and a long, honed finish. Drink 2013 - 2016. 94 points
From a cooler site near Masterton, with slightly heavier clay soil. 50% through malo. Classy, textural wine, with lovely balance and long finish. Orchard fruit, ripe citrus. Lovely.
The 2011 Petrie Chardonnay is barrel-fermented with natural yeast of which 50% undergoes malo-lactic fermentation. This gives a lovely lemon and white peach nose over notes of meal, cashew, toast and a whiff of some sulfides. Medium-bodied, it has a bright acid line running alongside concentrated, layered flavors and a silky texture before finishing long and well-balanced. Drink it now to 2016.
This has the Ata Rangi "made with a light touch" trademark all over it. Attractive Chardonnay with an array of fig, grapefruit, lanolin and savoury toasted nut and bran biscuit flavours. Delicate fruit sweetness is matched by a tease of acidity to give a satisfyingly dry finish. It's a great mystery to me why a wine of this quality and under the Ata Rangi brand doesn't command a higher price.

Clone 15 and clone 6 fruit from 21 y.o. vines on the 'Petrie' vineyard, East Taratahi, north of Martinborough, hand-picked and WBP, fermented to 13.5% alc. and aged 7 months in French barriques and puncheons, 18% new, the wine on lees, 30% undergoing MLF. Bright straw-yellow colour with slight green hues, pale on rim. This has a finely concentrated and intense nose of ripe citrus fruits with yellow stonefruit and mealy richness, unfolding plenty of mineral and flinty complexities, and beautifully balanced oak nuances. Full-bodied, richly packed and concentrated flavours of ripe citrus and stonefruits fill the mouth, showing layers of mealy, nutty oak, and flinty, reductive detail. Crisp, refreshing acidity is counterpoised by near-creamy barrel-ferment textures and the flavours possess a boldness and presence with energy and tension that carry through to a very long, lingering stylishly restrained finish. This is a richly concentrated, but elegant Chardonnay with raciness and complex detail. Serve with roasted poultry and pork over the next 4-5 years. 19.0-/20
Petrie Chardonnay 2011 reveals ripe grapefruit, lemon peel, lanolin and honeyed white peach aromas with nuances of cedar and meal. Medium to full-bodied, it is a rich style of Chardonnay with a creamy yet taut texture that delivers great balance on the long and toasty finish. Drink now to 2016.
Lovely minerality and precision here with layers of flavours that have pear and apricot flavours with hint of nuts. 100% barrel fermented, natural yeast with 20% new oak. Fairly long finish with hint of slate/chalk. The vines are now 20 years old. The [Chardonnay] vineyard here is grown just for Ata Rangi. The elevation is higher than in Martinborough. (tasted January 2013)
Nectarine, cumquat, lime, hazelnut, spice. Savoury barrel work, yeasty and funky, with an intense almost sweet burst of tinned grapefruit and cumquat flavour, spice and shapely acid – big flavour yet not without restraint. Flinty finish and marmalade and mixed peel in the aftertaste.
The Wine Front
Nose: Absolutely delicious bouquet of peach and sweet apple along with a focused oak signature of mild citrus spices, a hint of vanillin and butterscotch; medium+ complexity.
Palate: Soft yet youthful creamy texture packed with complexity and flavourful stone fruit and oak characters. A second wave of texture emerges centering on the medium+ acidity and medium Alcohol. An outstanding wine! Five Stars 95/100
This pared back chardonnay offers plenty of bright and ripe melon and apple fruits, some grilled hazelnuts and a citrusy thread – it's composed and zesty smelling. The palate's cut with grapefruit, citrus, nectarine and flinty complexity; honeysuckle builds through the finish. Great balance and depth here. 92/100
Full straw-yellow colour with golden hues, this has a full, but elegant, layered nose of complex savoury yellow stonefruits, mealy, flinty elements and nuts, finely expressed but with real intensity. A stylish, well-proportioned wine, the palate has tightly bound flavours of savoury peaches with complex spicy, flinty, nutty flavours showing sweetness and succulence. Fresh acidity is balanced by gentle barrel-ferment creaminess and the wine has a very long, sustained finish with nutty oak and mealy fruit and minerally elements showing. Clones 15 and 6 from the ‘Petrie' vineyard, the fruit hand-picked and whole bunch pressed, fully barrel-fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 7 months in 18% new French oak on lees. 30% MLF. Match with seafood, poultry and pork dishes over the next 4-5+ years.18.5-/20

Fine quality oak supplies cinnamon spice complementing the bread dough, stone fruit and cumquat flavours. There’s a little flintiness and minerality but it’s pretty much a smooth ride all the way – rich and ripe – but controlled and long. Nice. 94/100
The fruit for this wine which is one of two single-vineyard Chardonnays made by Ata Rangi, was grown several kilometres to the north of Martinborough. It shows considerable heft, the citrus and melon-infused fruit backed up by attractive, integrated oak. A wine of real presence. 95/100
Attractive wine that punches well above its weight. Subtle grapefruit, white peach and nectarine flavours flattered with a lovely biscuity character from oak and yeast lees influence. Very linear and long with a silken texture. 95/100
Sourced from the Petrie gravels, roughly 30 km north of Martinborough, this is a neat and pure expression of Chardonnay. It's quite ripe and fleshy but is held together by some nicely judged grip and leesy density; flavours of pear, quince and apple linger. 91/100
