Célèbre

Celebre 2007 An intriguing estate blend of merlot (40%) syrah (30%) and cabernet sauvignon (30%) that's a mellow and meaty mix of deeply ripe berry fruit and dried leaves. Smells comforting and complex, really settled already. The palate delivers chewy tannin amid sweet dark berry and plum fruits, still settling in. 92 points.
Nick Stock, Penguin Good Australian Wine Guide 2010

Celebre 2007 wins GOLD at Tri Nations Wine Competition 2009! This invitation-only taste-off between Australia, South Africa and New Zealand is an annual event pitting the top wines of each variety and country against one another. We're thrilled to have won a gold medal for this latest release of Celebre, which also achieved a place in the Top Ten NZ Wines in a recent Decanter feature (see below)

Celebre 2007 From one of the country's top producers, this blend of Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah is fluid and textured. It's youthful but still shows well, with an intense, curranty core, herbal edging and smooth tannins. Velvety, silky and very, very alluring.

Celebre 2006 is an intricately blended wine which melds the ripe blueberry and dark plum fruit of Merlot with the pepper and savoury spice of Shiraz, supported by the fit, lithe structure and minerality of Cabernet. 92 points. Tyson Stelzer WMB 100 May 2009

The 2006 Celebre (92 points) is even better [than the 2005] with an intense nose of wild strawberry and wild mint infused with touches of dried orange peel, the palate medium-bodied with superb definition with notes of game, leather and spice leading towards a lush, savory-tinged finish.

Célèbre 2006 A blend of Merlot, Cabernet and Syrah from Ata Rangi’s own Martinborough vineyard with a little Hawke’s Bay Syrah. This fascinating label has varied from good to great in the approximately two decades it has been made. The excellent 2006 vintage has produced a very good example with interesting berry and spice flavours supported by a backbone of firm drying tannins. Bordeaux-like - it promises to age well. 90 points

Célèbre 2006 50% Merlot, 30% Syrah, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. Red currant, plums, spices and pepper along with cassis aromas showing excellent ripeness and purity. Bold and full-bodied on palate this has plenty of extraction and structure. The tannins are refined and carry the very long finish. Ripe blackcurrant flavours are supported by rich and sweet red plum and pepper notes. Potential to develop well. The best Celebre made to date. 18.5+/20 Raymond Chan, Regional Wines newsletter Aug-Sep 08

2005 Célèbre (90 points) is a blend of 35% each of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, the rest Merlot and aged for 18 months in French oak. It has an engaging perfumed nose with touches of raspberry, sandalwood and spice while the palate has a lovely, caressing texture with a subtle cedar-tinged finish.

Célèbre 2005 A clever blend from a revered maker, Celebre masterfully melds the spicy pepper of Syrah with the structure of Cabernet and the fragrant lift of Merlot. The result is a finely structured, lingering example of a blend rarely seen in New Zealand. Tyson Stelzer, WBM 100 Feb 2008

Célèbre 2005 [This blend] threw me into a flat spin trying to work out which category to put it under. A very interesting wine, this one. A few Australian tasters might find it a little too herbal and sappy for their tastes but the more I had of it, the more I liked it. It's a quality wine and one that I found strangely compelling. [Winemaker comments  - try it with Tapas or Italian food - Celebre is fantastic food wine with flavours that hold up and complement tasty food without overwhelming the food. The deliciously enigmatic flavour profile is intentional, by the way!]
Garnet red with crushed berry, blackcurrant, pepper, dried herb and spices with a little licorice root richness. A bright and sappy wine with a distinctly grassy edge. On the palate light to medium bodied with fresh tart red berries, blackcurrant and pepper. It has a firm backbone of dry, lightly chalky tannin and lively acidity. Good length of flavour with a fresh, dried herb aftertaste. A refreshing wine that complements rather than combats food. 90 Points.

Célèbre 2005 A blend of merlot, syrah, cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc that has built up an extraordinary, almost cult following over the last 20 years. A lovely supple wine with a complex and bewildering aray of tastes and aromas.

We love is recent description of this year’s Célèbre: Ata Rangi Célèbre 2005 is a brilliant example of a Bordeaux style wine. Smell this wine and linger over its comforting wintery fragrances of exotic spices backed by black stonefruit. Sniff again and the aromas of pepper and black olives get your appetite going. It’s a beautifully layered wine, luscious on the palate, wonderfully satisfying. You will want to sit back in your chair with a deep sigh of contentment.  NZ Listener 1 Sep 2007

Ata Rangi Célèbre 2005 A blend of 35% cabernets, 35% syrah and 30% merlot from a winery known for its outstanding pinot. Martinborough is on the climatic outer edge for consistent production of ripe grapes from any of Celebre's varieties. The winemaker once told me that in a cool vintage Celebre is Rhone-like, while in warmer vintages it is more Bordeaux-like. This more Rhone style wine has sweet berry flavours and classy oak with vanilla, licorice, spice and herbs. Powerful and tight, it's a delight now but has potential. Ata Rangi Célèbre 2005. After 20 vintages, Ata Rangi's evolution has taken the Celebre label from a grunty, fully structured, dried herb flavoured, Cabernet dominant wine to the modern, medium-weighted, beautifully fragrant supple and luscious wine it is today. The 2005 Celebre is a beguiling and magical expression of aromatics, suppleness and elegance; it is a far cry from the robust wines of the early days, and far better for it. This is simply gorgeous red wine with a wonderfully spicy bouquet from the Syrah, a plummy merlot richness that enables approachability and a finely extracted backbone from the Cabernets that provides length on the palate and the ability to develop well over the next 5-7 years.
