Pinot Gris

2008 Lismore Pinot Gris  Ripe, luscious wine with seductive peach, mango and other stone fruit flavours. Medium/dry with a pure, creamy texture. Delicious wine that seems slightly sweeter than its relatively small amount of residual sugar (9 g/l) suggests. Very attractive. Bob Campbell MW website, Sep 08
2007 Lismore Pinot Gris has a light grapefruit and passion fruit nose with a touch of linseed, good definition although still quite muted. The palate is well-balanced with honey, vanilla pod, a touch of lemon with a soft, viscous finish. Neal Martin, e-RobertParker.com April 2008

Ata Rangi  Lismore Pinot Gris 2006 I'm not a great fan of Pinot Gris, but wines such as this sleek and silken textured example from Martinborough make me review my ambivalent feelings towards the variety. The grapes were hand-picked and whole bunch pressed before fermentation in three year old barrels. The result is an exuberant varietal mix of ripe pear, lanolin and orange blossom flavours against a background of creamy yeast lees characters and an oak influence that's so subtel you wouldn't pick it unless you knew the wine had been barrel fermented.

Fragrant, spicy, mouth-filling wine with a gentle texture. A touch of sweetness helps promote a seductively soft texture. Pear, stone fruit and guava flavours with a suggestion of yeastiness. Very impressive.

Ata Rangi Lismore Pinot Gris 2005 is understated with a fragrant suggestion of ripe pears, lime and nuts, but it’s the balance, concentration and structure, the rich velvety texture, balanced by a zesty lift, and the clean, lingering aftertaste that make this wine so fine. 4.5 stars.

Lismore Pinot Gris 2004 Excellent, fine toned, rich edged bouquet with quince and gentle spice aromas. Impact is glossy, firm and fine grained with some citrus hints, and a deep quince fruit character. Firm, fine mid palate has depth and juicy notes to add to its glossy feel with excellent flavour spread and palate weight. Finish has a trace of sweetness, but finishes dry, lingering slightly lemony, with a warm, brusque note. Smartly made, interesting, satisfying wine in need of another couple of years in bottle.

Lismore Pinot Gris 2003 - Beautifully perfumed, lovely fruit, this Martinborough wine has a delicacy, charm, balance, texture and length found in few of the other wines in this tasting.

The 20 best tipples from the country's top wineries. Ata Rangi Pinot Gris - One of Martinborough's best - with an edge of discernible sweetness balancing its strong, food friendly acids.

Lismore Pinot Gris 2001 - Banish any thoughts of light Italian Pinot Grigio and track down a bottle of this rare, lusciously ripe, top-flight New Zealand Pinot Gris. It's a a balancing act between ripe cantaloupe and honeycomb nuances, with hints of quince and herbs at its heart, boosted by a tremendous citrus freshness. The result is seductive, a ready partner for rich fish and white meat dishes.
