Captain Clive clash in Nelson

22 January 2012

It would be fair to say that cricket is a passion for Clive Paton. Summer visitors often get to enjoy a quick hit on the winey lawn with Clive and the team, and he has been known to travel the globe for a good game. So when Matt Hood from RaboBank heard Clive had a cricket team, he suggested the clash of the aged and infirm. The first fixture was held in Martinborough in January 2011 on a very hot and windy day, and on a very hard pitch. (A bit tough for those Nelson folk!)

This battle round was fought against the TITOKI RESERVE team on January the 22nd 2012. The team are based in Nelson, and captained by John Palmer (Air NZ Chairman). Captain Clive and his team, THE WOMBLES (Winemakers of Martinborough, Bowlers, Long-offs, Extroverts and Slips ), fielded a team with a slightly lower ‘average age’! The youngest member of the team was none other than Miller Paton-Masters (Clive’s Nephew), who apparently blew the opposition away, and was eventually awarded “Man of the Match” by the opposing team.

Winning Team “by about 25 runs”  WOMBLES!!!  says Clive. We hope you enjoy the resulting photos of this epic encounter, and keep an eye out for Clive & Miller,  you just never know where they might turn up, cricket bat in hand!

Hong Kong Dec 2011

Phyll put her hand up to visit Hong Kong in December 2011 to attend the 10th Annual Portfolio Tasting of Ata Rangi's importer, Altaya Wines.  By coincidence, daughter Mackenzie (now 18) was in the city also, staying with a Chinese school friend whose family live there. She was co-opted to help, and to attend the after-party at The Pawn!  This amazing restaurant was once the infamous Woo Cheong Pawnshop which dated back to the 1880s. With a multi-million dollar makeover by The Press Room Group, The Pawn opened in 2008 and is now not only a hub of hip dining, but is widely considered one of Hong Kong’s most sensitive and successful conversions of a heritage site.

Toast Martinborough Coming Soon!

We're gearing up for the big day, just a couple of weeks away! It's our 20th year, and we're proud to have worked in tandem with Ruth Pretty for all twenty. This team work has positioned Ata Rangi as the premium spot at what is recognised a New Zealand's most successful wine-food-music festival. A new line-up of talented musicians promises some serious fun and lively entertainment. Lyttelton band The Eastern bring foot-stomping fun to the stage (check out this U-Tube clip), while hot Wellington band The Eggs and jazz trio Twinset mean there's something for everyone. Ruth's menu looks superb, with some fresh new additions as well as the classics. If you've missed out on tickets, it's often possible to grab returns on the day from the Lions Caravan in the Martinborough Square. We look forward to seeing you here.  More Toast details and pictures..

Signing of the Aorangi Trust

After almost three years of planning and negotiation, Clive's vision of establishing a 'main land island' across the Aorangi Ranges in the south-east corner of the North Island has come to fruition. The Aorangi Trust Deed has now been signed, thanks to the foresight, cooperation and assistance of local landowners, deer hunters, DOC and Regional Councils. The aim is to boost predator and weed control to a level that will restore the native forest to its former glory and ultimately enable the re-introduction of endangered native flora and fauna, including kiwi. Special thanks to Paul Cutfield, Dave Lawrence, Lucy Harper and the team at Department of Conservation for their huge contribution in making this a reality.

SNOW in Martinborough

newssnowwebA huge southerly storm dumped 15 cm of snow on our vineyard in September. We routinely see snow on the western mountains of our valley and occasionally on local hills, but even the oldies in our village had never seen snow settled in the village itself. As a one-off it was very exciting and spectacularly beautiful.
